Three card poker is not a game of skill but rather one of luck. This does not mean that you should never play it. Playing the game, using optimal strategy and proper money management, can be very rewarding when you are getting good cards. As with any card game, you can experience hot streaks and cold streaks. Good money management will allow you to take advantage of the hot streaks and conserve your money during cold streaks.
Each player has three betting spots in front of them labeled ante, play, and pair plus. Start with the table minimum and place your bet on ante. Place the same amount on pair plus. After all the players place their bets, the dealer will deal sets of three cards to each player and place three cards on the dealer spot face down. You can now look at the cards you have been dealt. If your hand is Queen – six – four high or better, place a bet, equal to your ante wager, on the play spot and set your cards face down on the table. If your cards are less than Queen – six – four high, do not make the play bet and fold your hand. By betting on the play spot, you will be trying to have your hand beat the dealer’s hand. The pair plus bet only pays off if you have a pair or better in your hand and has nothing to do with whether you beat the dealer or not. This applies to the ante bonus also as you will see.
The dealer must have a Queen high or better to qualify and play the hand. If the dealer does not qualify, all players who stayed in will be given back their play bet, be paid on their ante bet, and receive ante bonus and pair plus payoffs, if appropriate. If the dealer qualified, you must have the higher hand to be paid on your play bet and ante bet. This payoff is at 1 to 1 in addition to any ante bonus and pair plus winner.
Rank of hands:
Three of a kind
Note: A straight beats a flush in this game because there are less ways to make a three card straight than to make a flush.
Ante bonus pay table:
Mini royal (Queen – King – Ace of the same suit) ———-10 to 1
Straight flush (3 consecutive cards of the same suit)——5 to 1
Three of a kind —————————————————-4 to 1
Straight ————————————————————–1 to 1
Pair plus pay table:
Mini royal ————————————————————-50 to 1
Straight flush ——————————————————–40 to 1
Three of a kind ——————————————————30 to 1
Straight —————————————————————–6 to 1
Flush ——————————————————————–3 to 1
Pair ———————————————————————-1 to 1
Keep in mind that you will be paid the ante bonus and for a pair plus winner even if the dealer does not qualify or qualifies and has a higher hand.
If you win two consecutive hands, when the dealer qualified, and you were paid for at least one pair plus bet, raise your ante bet by twenty per cent. If your starting bet was ten dollars, you would raise it to twelve dollars. Do not raise the pair plus wager. Keep your bet at twelve dollars until you lose a hand against a higher dealer hand and then revert back to the minimum. If you win two additional hands, as stated above, raise your ante bet another two dollars and so on.
This is a game where you hope to hold your own while trying to catch the bonus payouts. When you are ahead a reasonable amount of money, put some money aside to leave the table with. Don’t give it all back. As I said earlier, this is a game of luck, not skill.
