A wag once quipped that bringing a betting system to a casino is like trying to use a computer to alter the law of 1 + 1 = 2.
This is not quite true. A lot depends on luck when you’re using a system. Naturally. Gambling always depends on luck. And a lot depends on how much money you have to begin with. And on how good your memory is, how fast you are with figures, how finely honed your common sense is, how well you make decisions. Don’t let anyone fool you though, even the best players use systems, even gents like Nick the Greek who scorned them in public but who could remember every card played in a game and who spontaneously evolved systems according to the needs of the moment.
This strategy, known among blackjack players as “basic strategy,” requires that the player base his decisions on two pieces of information, the total of his hand and the value of the dealer’s up-card. However, the player has access to a great deal more information if he knows how to utilize it. Remember, blackjack is not an independent trial process. The previous hands do influence the subsequent hands in that once a card has been dealt out it is taken out of play. In other words, if you are dealt a certain card you know that you cannot receive that same card in any subsequent hand until the cards are reshuffled (unless, of course, more than one deck is used).
This knowledge can have significant implications for the skilled player. For example, you have been keeping track of the cards and realize two-thirds of the way through the deck that all sixteen 10-count cards have been played. Later, the dealer receives an ace as his up-card and offers you insurance. Naturally, you decline the offer realizing that with the deck completely depleted of 10s the dealer cannot possibly have 21. This is, of course, an extreme example but it illustrates the point that knowing what cards have been played out can put you in a better strategic position.
Similarly, if all four aces are played out early in the game you would be wise to reduce the size of your bets until the cards are reshuffled. No aces mean no naturals with their 3 to 2 payoffs and, hence, less chance for the player to come out ahead. Every time any card is removed from play it affects the player’s chances of winning, for better or worse. If you were to play blackjack for an extended length of time against a deck that had a single card missing you would win either more or less often than normal just because of the absence of that one card. How much the results differed from the norm and in which direction would depend on the value of the card that was missing. With the aid of a computer, it is possible to determine what impact every card in the deck has on the player’s chance of winning. Thus, if you had access to a computer while playing you could feed it the value of each card as it was played out and you would always know just how good your chances of winning the next hand were. What is the advantage of that? Simple, every time your chances of winning were better than usual you would increase the size of your bet. Every time they were below average you would cut back on your bet. When you won you would usually be winning big bets; when you lost you would usually be losing small ones. Since bringing a computer to a casino is considered bad form by most management personnel, a method had to be devised for approximating a computer’s calculations.
